faye jackson BBFC

What is BBFC? British board of film classifications.

Juno:

director- Jason Reitman
status- 12A
year-2008

Juno was submitted the the BBFC with a PG request. The key classification issues in the work are infrequent strong language, moderate sex references. When making their recommendations examiners also discussed the film’s tone, likely appeal and audience, and the treatment of the theme of teenage pregnancy.

The boy in the striped pajamas:

director- Mark Herman
status- 12A
year- 2008

It is a British film (from the producer of the Harry Potter series) and arrived at the BBFC with no category request.
The film views the Holocaust through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy.
At PG the BBFC guidelines state that where more serious issues are featured nothing in their treatment should condone unacceptable behavior. They also have a note on discrimination which requires that Discriminatory language or behavior is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of or in an educational or historical context.  Discrimination by a character with which children can readily identify is unlikely to be acceptable.

4.3.2.1:

director- Noel Clarke & Mike Davis
status: 15
year-2010

Noel Clarke and Mike Davis’s fast-paced British thriller 4.3.2.1 was submitted to the BBFC in March 2010 for an advice viewing. An advice viewing is a facility the BBFC offers distributors in which works (sometimes unfinished) can be viewed by a senior or experienced examiner who can give the company advice as to the likely category a work will receive.
The film had several issues that required a 15 classification.
Strong language required a 15, with over 70 uses of 'f**k' in the work. The BBFC’s 15 Guidelines allow for 'frequent use of strong language', but also state that 'the strongest terms (for example, 'cunt') may be acceptable if justified by the context

The Hunger Games:

Director: Gary Ross
Status: 12A with cuts
Year: 2011

Even before the film’s submission to the BBFC for classification, the Hunger Games novels were extremely popular, particularly amongst 11-14 year olds, and sold many millions of copies worldwide.
The BBFC's Guidelines at the time for 12A/12 stated 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context'. When the film was submitted to the BBFC for advice the key classification issues were:

  • the sometimes dark and possibly disturbing tone of the film
  • scenes of threat and violence, some involving sympathetic characters
  • sight of injuries and blood
  • the use of weapons, particularly knives, by children, and possible imitable behavior

me jess and tyler decided our short film is a 12.

The overall tone of a film or video, and the way it makes the audience feel may affect the classification. For example, a work which has a very dark or unsettling tone which could disturb the audience would be less likely to be passed 12A even if the individual issues in the film were considered acceptable under the BBFC Guidelines. Similarly, if a work is particularly positive or reassuring this may stop it being pushed up a category from 12A to 15.

short film proposal

i was thinking about doing a short film on a bullies point of view because people usually see the point of view of somebody being bullied never the the bullies story. to get the inside story of a bully would make it easier for people to understand what happens and why they do it. some people do bully other for fun but there is usually a reason and my short film is going to help people understand what those reasons are.

Below are a few reasons why bullies behave the way they do:

bullies pointPeople can direct frustrations, hurt, anger and difficulty at home or in class to you by bullying.

bullies pointLack of attention from friends, parents or teachers can make a person bully you, just to feel popular and seen as ‘tough’ or ‘cool’ and in charge.

bullies pointSome kids have learned bullying from others (parents, brothers or sisters, friends). They have seen them getting their way by being angry or pushing other people around. They believe that by putting fear in you, they will have the best shot at everything in school or in your neighbourhood.

bullies pointSome people also do that because they are victims themselves.

bullies pointBad up-bringing at home can make people insensitive to other people's feelings and emotions. They are happy to see their classmate depressed, sad and hurt.

bullies pointWatching a lot of violent films (movies and TV), and video games can make a person try out violent things. They usually try them out on people who appear smaller or weaker to them.

Short film idea's1

  • Mythical creature
  • secret disease or illness
  • everyone is dead apart from two people
  • psycho killer
  • violent friends
  • talking animals
  • wonderland
  • secretly mental disorder
  • secret party
  • secretly tired
  • monsters
  • Ed Gein

my favorite idea is the secret illness because i have a lot of idea's and i know what to do.
people having a secret illness and telling nobody so they can die alone is sweet but selfish because the families would want to say good bye. another good one is Ed Gein's story in 2 mins because Ed Gein was a secretive man and nobody should of found out.

The truth about meeting women

the truth about meeting women: T.J. Misny

the most shots that were used were close ups and it goes into an extreme close up when he enters a fantasy.
i think the sounds that were used were okay for the short film.
there were too many cut aways in the short film. i think the meaning of that was that he is delusional and he thinks everything will go wrong.

i didn't like that short film because it was boring and it only had 1 funny part in it.

Ashes

Ashes- Sophie black

the shots that were used in this video were

  • close up
  • extreme close up
  • mid shot
  • extreme close up
The shots were used more then one because the short film was sort of showing her feeling trapped in a relationship that she no longer wants to be in. There is a wide show in the short film but its only about 5 seconds to 10 seconds long.

the sounds that were in the short film were something you would find on a horror movie because of the fear she has of being with the man she is with and it looks like she feels dead inside when she looks at him. you can hear a screeching sound when the scenes are changing to her nightmare and his reality.

i thought the short film was creative but it did get a little confusing when it kept flicking backwards and forwards out of the way she see's things or her dream.
